Tongue Piercing NOT Gone Wrong

I’m a little confused here, followers.

So, lately we’ve been getting a ton of submissions of tongue piercings.

Tongue piercings that look similar to this:

All of them have been described as having “incorrect” or “inappropriate” jewelry, and I’m not sure why.

That’s a straight barbell.

It’s literally the most common type of jewelry used in tongue piercings. There is nothing wrong with a tongue piercing that has a straight barbell in it.

Figured I’d just clear that up.

SUBMITTER COMMENT:

She’s selling these plugs made out of rolled up paper on etsy.

This is her description of the item:

white plugs made from a page from a magazine
size 1/2” campletely stable and safe to wear
able to be sterelized!!!
i don’t think that they need o-rings, but if you would like some please leave a note, and i’ll send some with your order!!

**MY PAPER PLUGS/TUNNELS ARE COATED WITH DECOPAUGE, THEN I COAT THEM WITH 2 COATS OF ARCRYLIC SEALER ~this makes them safe to wear for certain periods of time. (arcrylic sealer is shown on the last picture)
NOTE: not recomended for really long periods of wear.
NOTE: not recomended for use during stretching. wait at least 3 weeks after stretching before wearing these! doing so could cause infection in your ears, and could also ruin your plugs.

________If you ARE worried about my plugs damaging or hurting your ears in any way, i do suggest using PTFE tape around them so that your ears are not in contact with the plug. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS, i will put some of my own PTFE tape on the plugs that you order for an additional $0.50 ~i may not have any currently in stock, and if that is the case, please be patient as your order will take slightly longer to be sent out/shipped.

WHAT’S AWFUL: well just in case it’s not obvious… they’re freakin magazine pages rolled up to make ‘plugs’. Also, she claims they can be “sterelized!”.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: Don’t wear, make, or buy rediculous unsafe and unsanitary creations such as this.

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT:  A girl I used to go to high school with had a baby a few months ago, and she decided that tattooing from home would be a good way to earn some money to support the baby.

WHAT’S AWFUL: One, it’s done in her house, not a shop.  She’s not licensed and has never gone through any training.  The lines look super wonky and hard to read.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED:If she really wants to be a tattoo artist, get trained and licensed and work in a shop rather than at home.

Acrylic horror story

I am submitting myself unfortunately.

My blowout and swollen lobe is the result of wearing acrylic plugs for three days in a row. I used to think I knew alot about stretching until the day this happened. My ears had been quite itchy but I ignored it. One night I decided to remove my plugs and massage my lobes with e-oil, once I was finished I realized that my lobes were angry, red, itchy, swollen and hard to the touch and I didn’t understand why. I kept the plugs out for two days and my ears shrunk from a 1/2 to a 4g. I was so depressed. I did my research and found that acrylic plugs are actual toxic and release cancer causing toxins into your body. Yikes! I babied my ears for months with sea salt soaks and multiple E-oil massages to flatten the blowout (which was mostly swelling in the beginning) My blowouts are gone now and I am slowly going back up to my new goal 9/16ths! Now as a result of this Ive been warning others about acrylic when I can and I am way more aware of the materials that I put in my ears and which plugs are meant for extended wear and which aren’t.

MODERATOR COMMENT:
Blowouts do not magically happen with the wearing of a certain pair of plugs. They are the result of improper stretching over a long period of time. -Kat

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: I was looking through the plugs tag on tumblr and found this

WHAT’S AWFUL: She made the plugs herself, and i’m guessing she probably made them out of clay and glitter. They’re uneven and her ears are covered in glitter, which means the inside of her lobes are covered in glitter too.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED:well she can start with taking those awful plugs out of her ear and never wearing them, or any other plug she made herself again. You should never wear plugs that have glitter flaking off them like that.

They advertise on facebook that they offer double ear piercings done simultaneously with guns, targeted at parents looking to pierce their young children’s ears…

As if that’s a practice worth bragging about.

SO MANY TERRIBLE THINGS: Some tattoos n' piercings for you

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: This is my cousin. Let’s say we used to be really close, but not so much anymore. She’s done most of her own piercings, tried to offer to do ones that I wanted [a huge “hell no” there], and picks RANDOM SHIT SHE LIKES to be tattoos. Like “oh, I like X. Let me put symbol for X on my body forever because sure.” Some of these things she hasn’t been a fan of for that long, either. I’m not saying tattoos shouldn’t be of things that you like or might be meaningful, but seriously. It’s just because “I kind of dig this and that.” And most of them look like garbage!
About her own piercings [sorry I couldn’t find any pictures!]. I wager most of them were with some house-hold needle. I was never present for any of them. But I can tell you, the areas aren’t pretty. Her bellybutton rejected twice, maybe more. Those were ill-placed too, so now it’s just a scarred mess that looks like a bunghole. I’m pretty sure she pierced her own lip and industrial [which the latter rejected and is all scarred now, too].

WHAT’S AWFUL:
1. The “zombie fairy”: First of all, I wouldn’t have guess that it was zombie anything. I’m only just realizing that’s a brain [I hope] in her hand. The lines are so very uneven. The coloring might as well have been done by a toddler with colored pencils. Does she have a spot over her eye? Is she a dalmatian now? I don’t really know what to make of it. By the way, this one is on her calf.
2. The Rabbit: I don’t know what happened, but somewhere along the line she became obsessed with Alice in Wonderland [seriously, out of the blue]. She got this on her forearm. Again, uneven lines here. The coloring is uneven. I always thought the layers in the ears looked like tears in them, or like mistakes when the “artist” was doing them. And, if you didn’t notice, it looks like a five year old designed it. Look at that watch…it’s not even an even circle.
3. The Harley Quinn symbol: This is one of the more recent random obsessions. She never even gave a remote shit about Batman EVER until some time during her brief college experience. Once again I bring you to uneven coloring. The spacing between the shapes is not even either, and that BUGS me!

There are more tattoos that I won’t add because they aren’t too awfully done. Her first were the theatre drama/comedy masks. My one complaint is that the masks aren’t evenly sized, but ok. The other is from Rocky Horror: the lips. Yeah, those red lips. It’s nicely colored and shaded, though [but is placed on her foot. Oh well]. She’s got some tiny Alvira-related tattoo as well. Again, out of NOWHERE she suddenly digs it. As far as I know, those are all she has. But I could very easily be wrong.

SO SORRY FOR THE NOVEL, GUYS

HOW FIX: I don’t even. Terrible overload. Go to a professional; DO NOT try to pierce yourself of others without proper training…and throwing “I’m buying a piercing gun from online” on the table isn’t going to help; get cover-ups maybe?; stop being so dumb. Put a little more thought into what you want for a tattoo and who you choose to put them on you.

Feel free to add/correct whatever. Hope I did that all correctly.

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: A girl on a forum I frequent posted her new tattoo. 5 1/2 hours of work for some of the shakiest line work I’ve ever seen.

  1. Write: WHAT’S AWFUL: It looks like he was shaking his entire body when doing those lines. I could do better with a blindfold.

  2. Write: HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: Research your artist before hand and make sure that their portfolio work is similar to what you want! Theres no reason to have such mediocre work permanently on your body.

Terrible stick and poke tattoo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq1n6Ib0NAI&feature=g-vrec

Submitter Comment: I was browsing youtube and I was looking at some other stick and poke tattoos when some how stubbled across this little gem!

What is awful: Where do I start! this lady is using india ink which is hardly a proper pigment for tattooing and could possibly be harmful! She thinks that dipping a dirty sewing needle into hydrogen peroxide will make it “sterile”. She doesn’t wear gloves, they are outside being exposed to so much bacteria just waiting to infect the “victim”, there is no stencil of any sort and the end result looks as if a kindergardener took a sharpie to her arm!

How it can be fixed: Go to a PROFESSIONAL!!! Don’t do home tattoos with dirty equipment! hydrogen peroxide will not sterilize that needle, only an auto clave will get ride of all that bacteria!! and don’t let people who look that normal poke you with anything!

Sorry, I wish I’d taken a picture of this.

Saw this guy, who looked in his 40s, come into this shop where I work with 2 little girls who I’m assuming are his children. He had a few piercings, a few tattoos and rather large lobes. I’m not bothered about this size a person stretches their lobes given that mine are a decent size, but what was awful was the size of the BLOW OUTS. You could have landed space ships on them! And his lobes were red and angry looking, a part of me died inside :(

Just a helpful link that outlines the laws regarding tattoo and body piercing laws of minors by state!

MOD COMMENT:
this seems like the best resource for quick-checking your state’s laws.

Submitter’s comment: I’m yellow, the girl in the picture is blue. I went to school with this girl, and thought she knew better… I dont know who she went to or where she did her research on surface piercings, but its definitely wrong.

What’s wrong: A curved barbell in a surface piercing, which will most likely lead to rejection of the piercing.

How it can be fixed: Go to a better qualified piercer and have it replaced if she can. There are plenty of APP members working in our area too.
