SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: This girl is 16 years old and tattoos herself and her friends. The first picture is one she did on and friend and the second picture is her babies name that she did on herself. She’s underage and not a professional. She does these tattoos at her house/her friends houses in unsterile environments.

WHAT’S AWFUL: The wonky line and unevenness. The first tattoo is not proportional, has awful shading and just looks messy. The tattoo she did on herself has shaky lines and looks like she wrote it on herself in pen, then just tattooed over her own handwriting. She’s done other tattoos too, like her friends knuckle tattoos of a cross and an infinity sign - both shaky, uneven and poorly shaded. And she’s tattooing in an unsterile environment, which can lead to infection.

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: From her Tumblr: “Just proving to a tumblr anon that my book tattoo does not look like a drunk dude did it in a poorly lit basement.”

Supposed to be a book with the Chanel logo on one cover and RK for Rilo Kiley on the other. The lettering to the side doesn’t look that clean either.

WHAT’S AWFUL: Despite her saying it wasn’t, this tattoo definitely looks poorly done. There is no depth, no decent shading, no real artistic talent seen.

My own septum horror.

So, I was only 14 and desperately wanted another piercing to accompany my two lip piercings (that were done at a great shop in the UK) but my parents wouldn’t let me, so what did I decide to do? I decided that when I went on holiday, I would go off on my own and get my septum pierced, yes!

No… The first place I went to looked very clean, everything was in sterile packaging and that would’ve been the perfect place to get it, but no, they wanted to see ID… So where did I go? Down a backstreet alley tattoo parlour… I said I was 16, the guy didn’t even ask for ID or anything, he took me through the grotty looking shop, past people getting awful tattoos (without gloves!) and he sat me on a broken office chair. He pulled out a plastic box full of bare needles, not even wrapped! After realising he didn’t have any septum jewellery he proceeded to take a GINORMOUS keeper out of the dirty display case (no way was I going to be able to flip that up) and dropped it into a cup of water to ‘sterilise’ it.

He sat on the desk next to me and what I didn’t realise at the time, now having over 30 piercings, he pierced it SO SLOWLY, I was in absolute agony. He was wearing gloves but whether they were clean or not is a different story. When the needle was finally through he reached into his pocket for a small tub of Vaseline, dipped the keeper in it and shoved it through my nose. He said if I can’t flip it later, he would change it for me for free.

A few hours later when I realised ‘damn, this won’t hide!’ I went back to him, he then proceeded to say he had no jewellery and asked if I had a ring I could put in… Oh joy, I had a ball closure ring in my pocket! Like the keeper, he dropped it in water, opened it a bit wider and rammed it through the fresh wound in my nose. I cried so hard because of the insane amounts of pain.

I was SO lucky not to get an infection and a few years later actually have a happy, healed septum. And the best ending to this story, next time I went to my proper (amazing) piercer back home, I told her the horror story and I have no idea what she did but the guy lost his licence and now works in Tesco!

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: An acquaintance posted a picture of herself, I’ve always liked her style, so I decided to take a look at her other pictures…and I saw this pic.

WHAT’S AWFUL:  First of all, I know NOTHING about stretching (it’s just something I don’t care about :v) but this looks just wrong… I mean they’re dirty, not even proper jewelry… and if I’m not mistaken she was complaining, Dec-Jan, about 0G hurting too much.  No, she’s not joking, she ACTUALLY wears them.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: Stop wearing them D: I don’t know if it’s harmful or what but… imho they look disgusting :/ And no, I’m not hating…as I said I love her style but…this is just wrong >.<!!

Hi- not really a question but a note of thanks! I had my ears pierced with a gun about 12 years ago, and while one was fine the other ear was pierced at an angle and I couldn't put earrings in. I finally got them repierced yesterday and thanks to this blog I was able to choose a reputable piercing studio (Cold Steel in Camden, London) and had a great experience. I'm so pleased with my ears, even if they are just lobe piercings, and would like to thank you all for being so informative :)

Yay! <3

Health violations uncovered at local tattoo parlors → weau.com

Local news story to where I am (the shop I went to had zero violations, I’m pleased to say) that just underscores why you need to research your shop.

Research of a shop goes BEYOND just making sure the artists are skilled and an autoclave is present; they should be displaying certificates showing that they pass health inspections or should provide proof if asked.

Out of 13 local shops, SEVEN failed health inspection in matters relating to sterilization of equipment, most of them being that the shops just flat out weren’t submitting spore test samples to the county and/or the state.

For the link-afraid:

The little ovens are tested to make sure they’re cleaning properly.

Proof of this in a spore sample must be sent to the health department once a month.

And what if the results are late?

“It’s a significant violation and if we continue to see it occur, we would have to issues orders. That could include ceasing and desisting operations until they demonstrate that their autoclave is working,” Thoune said.

Thoune said blood and bodily fluids left on the casings comes with many risks if it’s passed onto the next customer.

“Certainly Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV; there are also surface bacteria that are capable of causing skin infections,” Thoune said.

Here is a friendly reminder of the submission rules.

How to lay out a photo or video submission:

  1. Source the image to it’s original URL So it looks like this: (SOURCE)
  2. Write: SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: Here you can explain the preface to your submission. What context needs adding, and is there anything you can add to make the submission make more sense? Is there a background to the photo?
  3. Write: WHAT’S AWFUL: Here you can explain why the modification in the submission is awful. Explain what’s made it awful, if you have that information. Anything you know that explains why it is actually awful.
  4. Write: HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: Here, explain what could be done to fix the modification. Perhaps include a photo of a well-done version. IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING A TATTOO, LEAVE STEP FOUR.

Note Step 4? If it is a tattoo, do not write anything. You do NOT need to write ‘Get a cover up’ or any other witty variation of it.

I’ll repeat that: If it is a tattoo DON’T WRITE HOW TO FIX IT.

See, it’s even in capital letters for you!

Thank you.

ALSO please, when you are submitting stories or even regular submissions, SHORT SWEET AND TO THE POINT is really appreciated. We probably aren’t going to read through your story if it’s more than like 2 paragraphs/10 good-sized sentences, which means IT WON’T GET POSTED.

Thanks,
Kat

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT:First thing on my news feed today. I go to school with the girl who is piercing the guys ear, and lets just say this isn’t the first time she’s pierced someone. She offers to pierce people with her dirty used needles all the time.

WHAT’S AWFUL: She’s piercing that guys ear with a needle she’s most likely used before, no gloves, mentions her fingers are wet from alcohol and its done in a bathroom.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: “Daniel” should take the ring out of his ear, wait for it to heal and then go to a reputable shop to get his ear pierced. Also the girl should stop giving people and herself piercings and people should stop asking her for piercings because they’re risking getting infection.

I don’t have a photo to submit and I’m a new follower to your blog as well. I just wanted to share a piercing story of my own.

Last summer I went to a respectable shop in my town to get surface hip piercings. I didn’t do as much research as I should have and I have to say my experience wasn’t a good one. The piercer himself was licensed and understood what he was doing, but he was incredibly rude to me and my friend and it seemed like the whole time he was trying to rush the both of us out the door.

After he pierced me, he didn’t give me any aftercare directions at all or give me the opportunity to ask him because every time I started to say something he would cut me off and talk over me. Once I got home I did a little more research and found that he didn’t even use the proper jewelry on me, using curved barbells instead of the barbells that are kind of shaped like a large staple.

They eventually rejected and now I have scars from them, not to mention they were crooked and completely out of line with each other. I will never be going back to that shop.

SUBMITTER COMMENTS: I’m submitting myself. This is my Ai hanzi back tattoo and triforce tattoo that I got done  at Buddahs in Erie PA. The back tattoo was my first and I had heard good things about the place, so I blame myself for not researching more on that one. But why I went back for my triforce tattoo ( with two other friends who also got one on their wrists) I will never know.

WHATS AWFUL: My back tattoo is crooked, and the heart at the bottom wasn’t supposed to be running into the bottom of the character like that. The ink is also already fading even though ( in this photo) it was only 2 years old. The lines on the triforce aren’t  straight in some places, there are white spots, and its generally crooked.

“Hayley i want you bad baby! I wana make love to your pretty face every night!”

We’d like to thank “master-baiter669” for this lovely submission.

But really, bro. Trolling or not, are you like twelve? This is rude and gross and inappropriate. You better figure out…

Please. Don’t insult 6 year olds like that. They have far more respect for other human beings than you.

Also, i believe Hayley owned you, not the other way around. fuck off.

Today my mom told me a story about how one of her coworker’s husband does tattoos from their home. Also that he tattooed his wife with “ink” from a melted down chess piece.. A CHESS PIECE.
How do people even think of these things?

I immediately thought of this blog.

SUBMITTER COMMENT: Saw this on my friend’s facebook the other night. This is the second piece his friend has done on him, but this is the worst of the two. I don’t know if his friend tattoos out of a shop or home, but her gallery of drawings is full of work like this (wonky lines, weird proportion, etc.). It’s supposed to be Harley Quinn but it looks like a child drew it.

What’s Awful: Lines look uneven and shaky, especially around the pumpkin. Shading is uneven and looks like marker in some places. It looks like scratcher work.

How it can be fixed: Getting it removed with laser treatments is probably the best bet.

I feel like submittig my own story concerning lobe piercing at unsanitary shops, after seeing so many people in my environment (and on the internet) making the same mistake.

When I was a young girl, I desperately wanted earrings, so one day my mum decided to go to a local jeweller with me. It’s a reputable shop - but only relating to jewellery. My mum didn’t know a lot about piercings, so we simply went there and - of course - they used a gun. I have no clue whether they even used gloves, but  of course it took place in the unsanitary, normal selling room. After a few weeks, my lobes became infected and hurt a lot, so I took the earrings out and let my ears heal. Many months later, I begged and asked for earrings, for the second time. And - oh dear - we went to the same shop, again. They repeated the whole procedure, but this time, my ears not only got infected - it was way worse. Just like in this story, the ear studs somehow got inside my lobes and stayed there.

My parents and I went to see a doctor and during an incredibly painful surgery, he successfully managed to get removed them. That event really shaped me and it’s the reason why I will always try my best to prevent people from getting piercings done in shops like Claire’s or at jeweller’s shops.

SUBMITTER COMMENT: Sorry no pictures, this took place at my work place! So upon sitting at my desk two girls in my office came over to chat to me about the piercings in my ear. I happily chatted to them, and gave them this link to this blog as they were thinking of increasing the amount they have already. One took a look at this blog and upon the advice here sought out a reputable piercing and had another dermal in her face.

The second however… She got two tragus piercings in one go, a week later had her seconds in her ears, a week later after that had her thirds in her ears. Roughly after a month her thirds rejected and one of the tragus piercings had some scarring and irritation starting to form. Roughly a month after this she had her nose pierced, and a few weeks later I noticed she had a nape piercing with a straight bar. A bit concerned I ended up chatting to her and seeing if I could convince her to get a 90° surface bar and/or take out a few others to give her body a chance to heal them up correctly.

She listened quietly for a bit, and refused on the grounds that she thought the straight bar was ‘prettier’. She brushed off my concern and just kept the straight bar in and her other piercings. For the last month or two I was in work I basically kept dibs on her piercings as they slowly rejected. She now has a large worm like scar on the back of her neck and it looked as though it actually fell out, and white lumps in her ears from the rejected thirds. As for her other piercings she was lucky since they pretty much healed but the one tragus has pretty heavy scarring.

WHAT’S AWFUL?: Having so many piercings in a short amount of time, and a straight barball in a nape piercing. How she had someone pierce her so many times in such a short amount of time I don’t know. They could have been home jobs, but I wasn’t keeping dibs on the type of jewellery at all other than the nape.

HOW CAN IT BE FIXED?: Space your piercings out evenly to allow them to heal, have them with correct jewellery and commit to cleaning your piercings. As for the scarring give it some TLC with Sea salt soaks or camomile presses.
