Submitter Comment: So this is the tattoo of a guy I work with. The first picture is the day it was done, the second is about 4 days after it was done, and the last one is from earlier this week. The back story is that it was a home done tattoo. I think he said he had it done by his brother. When he first got it done, it looked a little wonky, but overall, not horrible. However, I could tell that the red ink looked a little off. The second picture is rough to look at. He told me that the doctor told him if he had waited any longer, they would have had to amputate his leg from the infection. He was in the hospital for at least two days being pumped full of antibiotics. the last picture is what it now looks like. All of the red ink got pushed out and it’s essentially a huge scar. When he came back to work, he had to use a cane because he could barely walk. When I was talking to him about it, he said he will never get a tattoo again (to which I responded that going to a proper studio would alleviate that fear because they’re hygienic and safe) and that he sold his tattoo gun (cue facepalm).
Whats Awful: Home done tattoo gone REALLY wrong. Infection, almost amputation. Then, to top it off, selling the tattoo gun to someone who could get infected because it wasn’t properly cleaned.
How it can be fixed?: Go to a proper studio with proper hygiene protocols. If your tattoo looks wonky, GET MEDICAL ATTENTION. This guy is very lucky that he still has his leg.
another shitty things about claire's: i got pierced there when i was about 4 months old. i was lucky enough not to get an infection, but i've had a lump (scar tissue, i'm guessing) around the hole in my left ear. when i started stretching, my left ear was significantly tougher to stretch and it was painful. there's not much i can do about it either. just shows you what happens when you get pierced by a teenage girl with a gun who has little idea what she's doing.
You could go to your piercer and have them repierce it or otherwise work something out for you to fix your stretching problems.
And regardless of preexisting scar tissue, stretching shouldn’t be painful. All you’re gonna end up doing there is making it worse.
In case you needed another reason to hate Claire's... I worked there when I was 16. I had been working there for two weeks when I was "licensed" to pierce ears. Two weeks. 16 years old. "Licensed." I had no idea how wrong it all was until long after I quit. I feel very angry about this still.
Submitter Comment: So this is my tattoo that I got for my 18th birthday (I’m 19 now.) and this was taken soon after I got it. Reading this blog is making me think that it’s actually not that well done and now the lines are looking fuzzy….Of course this probably could have been avoided if I HAD DONE MORE RESEARCH AND NOT GONE WITH MY DAD TO SOME DUDES BASEMENT TO GET IT! He wore gloves and everything looked sterile but oh my God, I’m lucky I didn’t get an infection!
What’s Awful: Getting tattooed in some guys basement, an unclean environment, because I didn’t do any research! The lines look fuzzy and as you can see, the moon isn’t shaded in all the way. (That red in one of the stars has faded away though.)
How it can be fixed: Go to a pro next time!!!! And maybe get it cleaned up…I’m not entirely sure, I’m curious to find out what the mods think.
It’s a little wonky, but I think a good tattoo artist would probably be able to touch it up so that it looks better. Find a good artist and give them a visit to discuss your options. :)
SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: this girl Kirstyn let her best friend attempt to give herself snake bites and posted statuses about it through the process. They both proceeded to laugh about how a vein was struck and she bled everywhere. When people commented out of concern her friend (the “piercer”) said “we just hit a small vein she cant get hurt from it or anything”
WHAT’S AWFUL: she’s bleeding everywhere from bad placement. The one on the other side is too low. The jewelry was bought from a piercing kiosk in the mall and is not sterile. I could go on about whats wrong here.
HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: remove and let both holes heal. Go to a professional and don’t let your friends pierce you just cause they have a “kit”.
SUBMITTER COMMENT: Found this baby on my Facebook news feed. Looks like the person is either making the best of a bad situation, or this is a desperate grab to do something “different”. Probably the latter.
WHAT’S AWFUL: First of all, that spit lobe. Then the fact they pierced and stretched the end of the lobe flesh. The acrylic taper, oh my. And the extreme redness and swelling. That is not a happy piercing!
HOW CAN IT BE FIXED: Take the taper out. Heal it up. Book in for some lobe reconstruction surgery. And if they still wan to stretch their lobes again, then seek some professional advice on how to go about it properly.

Submitter comment: You’ve probably seen this one before but I just love this, it’s so hilarious. Made a mistake, oh ok just cross it out, it’s all cool.
What’s awful?: Everything. 2 spelling errors, the fact the artist has just crossed it out. The rose is very basic, like a 10 year old drew it. the words are hell wonky. Looks like the kind of thing people do in their lounge with tattoo machines they buy on eBay.
SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: I was searching my boyfriend’s ex’s facebook page like the stalker I am when I saw this jewel. I suppose it’s supposed to be a rose with birth and death dates beneath but at this point who knows.
WHAT’S WRONG: What’s right? This hardly looks like a flower, definitely wasn’t done by a professional or in a clean setting, the dates aren’t readable… Nothing about this is acceptable in any form.
Hello! I was wondering if it'd be possible to get like a proper, professional dictionary-ish post about the usage of term "gauge" and the correct english terminology on stretched ears? I'm not a native english speaker and all english variants kinda confuse me as my native tongue does not have as many terms in it. I'm afraid I might sound like a twat and use the wrong words if no-one explains them throughly... Anyway, this blog is very enlightening, keep up the good work!
Hm. Okay let’s see if I can do this without looking like a derp. It’s one of those things that’s become such a part of my vocabulary it might be hard to explain. >.<
Gauge: The measurement or size of the jewelry.** How to use in a sentence.
- What size are those plugs? 00 gauge. - What size are your ears stretched to? 2 gauge.
How to NOT use in a sentence.
- Yo what size are your gauges?
- I’m gonna gauge my ears later today!*
Plug: solid jewelry worn in the ear.
Eyelet: see through or hollow ear jewelry. May also be called “tunnels” (which I suppose isn’t wrong but does get some people’s panties in a bunch and I personally don’t like it much).
*Stretch: proper word for what many people use “gauge” as a verb for.
- Cool stretched ears!
- I’m going to stretch my ears later today!
That’s all I’ve got for now. Let me know if there are terms you’re unsure of that I missed. I know I was working on a terminology list a while ago that never got finished. Perhaps I’ll work on that some more.
**usually “gauge” is only used to describe sizes under 00g. above that, inch or millimeter measurements are generally used. Someone could also say “what gauge are those plugs?” and that could be answered by “they’re 1/2”!” Normally, saying something like “one half inch gauge” just sounds silly and redundant.
Submitter comment: so I visited topshop with a friend in London, the big one in Oxford street. Got to the bottom floor and found out they are actually tattooing in there! Couldn’t believe they have actually added tattoos and piercings to a clothes shop.
What’s awful: well the tattoos were terrible, conditions looked cramped and dirty and it was just underage young girls getting piercings in the back of a shop next to a nail bar.leave clothes shops for clothes and tattoos and piercings to fully qualified pierces in sanitary shops.
"Surgical steel" doesn’t really mean anything, because it doesn’t denote the quality of metal.
Here’s what the APP says to look for in steel jewelry for initial piercings:
Surgical Steel is made of a variety of alloys. Many of them are used for body jewelry, but only a few specific grades are proven biocompatible: steel that is ASTM F-138 compliant or ISO 5832-1 compliant; ISO 10993-(6,10, or 11) compliant. [Note: The EEC Nickel Directive is a regulation that requires a low rate of nickel release for all materials used for costume or fine jewelry, belt buckles, watches, or other metallic accessories with direct skin contact. It does not specify nor prove that a material is safe to wear in the body; therefore, compliance with this directive alone is not sufficient for meeting the APP initial jewelry standards.]
You also want jewelry that has a good polish with no scratches/toolmarks, that is internally threaded or threadless (unless it’s a ring, obv).
Basically, just stick with the high quality companies for high quality steel. Just because something says “surgical steel” doesn’t mean it isn’t made from the same quality of metal as your forks.
EDIT FOR COMMENTS:
Does “implant grade” denote better quality, perhaps, than the wide definition of surgical steel?
It does, however “implant grade” has sort of become a buzzword lately and is used incorrectly sometimes, unfortunately. :/ I’ve even seen jewelry on a rack at a hair supply store that claimed to be implant grade. “ASTM F-138 compliant or ISO 5832-1 compliant; ISO 10993-(6,10, or 11) compliant” is what you want to look for. This is why I recommend just sticking to the higher quality companies if you want higher quality jewelry (Anatometal, Industrial Strength, etc.)
so, I work in an ice cream shop. if people want samples, we give them a small sample with a new, clean taster spoon. if we gave them one somebody else just used, they'd be outraged and grossed out. so then why do people get pierced with someone else's needles??!!!??!?!
I thought this was going to be irrelevant but yes, that’s a good point.
Submitter’s comment: SHOP WARNING; This is Big Daddy’s Tattoo in Harbor City, CA really close to Wilmington. One of my old friends just got her tattoo finished up here so I checked out their page and OH MY GOD. Some of their stuff is alright, but some of it is just frightening.
What’s awful: That poor barbell is only just hanging on and I’m sure that’s not just because the piercing is fresh. Seriously, I give that thing like a week before it pops right out. Maybe less.
How it can be fixed: That is a botched job, man. Nothing will save that thing now. Go back and demand a refund because this is just cruel. It needs to be taken out and allowed to heal before the bridge piercing is attempted again. Man, I really hope it doesn’t scar too bad, but that’s also really likely with this piercing. I just can’t believe they would advertise this on their facebook page like they’re proud of it.
Mod comment: I considered editing out the shop’s name, but I gave their FB a browse, and um yeah. So much ill-fitting initial jewelry it needs the warning.
I saw your BAF post, and I'd also just like to throw out that they're REALLY good about getting your jewelry to you quickly. They don't waste time. And like you said, they're very reasonably priced/affordable. I couldn't be happier with them. (:
From texas to DE it takes like…4 days tops to get to me and from texas to GA (and through the college’s mail system) it only takes like a week. Seriously I can order something on Monday and have it by Friday.
Iirc, they’re also fast with outside-the-US orders. :)
I hit a button and accidentally deleted our ENTIRE inbox. I didn’t even have an option to be like “no i didn’t want to do that kthnx” because tumblr didn’t ask…
SO, if you had any submissions or burning questions that haven’t been answered or posted, it’d be lovely if you could resubmit. It doesn’t look like there is currently anything in our queue, so if you submitted it and it’s not posted, it’s not getting posted unless you resubmit.
