people have been asking me how i did my cartilage piercing by myself so here is a guide to help you incase you would like to pierce your own cartilage :)
step 1.) sterilize the needle. (you can do this by boiling it in water at 100”C for 10-20 minutes or put it over a flame until it becomes red hot.)
That will NOT sterilize the “piercing” needle
step 2.) put an antibacterial rubbing alcohol on the place you want to pierce. (you can find this in most drugstores)
step 3.) measure where your piercings will be so they are equal, and take a washable marker and mark the place. (preferably a darker colour so you can see the dot)
There’s really no point in “cleaning” the piercing spot if you’re just going to contaminate it with unsterile/unsanitary markers.
step 4.) put a potato or an orange rind behind your ear so when you pierce it, you dont prick yourself.
NO, NEVER EVER EVER DO THIS. If you EVER see a piercer doing this, RUN LIKE HELL.
step 5.) quickly put in the earing and secure it tight enough so that it doesnt fall off, but loose enough so that you can clean it with a q-tip.
taking care of it:
clean it twice a day. *cleaning it too much will make the inside of the piercing raw*
you can clean it with any piercing cleaner or salt water.
Please don’t clean your piercings with “piercing cleaners” (unless it’s something like H2Ocean). The mixture to make saline is 1/8 to 1/4 TEASPOON of pure sea salt diluted in 8 oz. of warm bottled/distilled water
DO NOT clean it with hydrogen peroxide. hydro-peroxide is used to clean cuts and help the heal faster. using hyro-perox. will result in the skin closing around the earring and that will not be fun at all..
It may just be me, but i have never heard of jewelry embedding in a piercing due to the usage of hydrogen peroxide, but due to the jewelry not being long enough to allow for swelling.
twist the earring around 3 times, once a day, to make sure the skin doesnt grow around the ear.
DO NOT twist the jewelry in any healing (or even healed) piercing. Please, just don’t even think about doing it.
DO NOT take it out for atleast 12 weeks. you want to wait until its fully healed because taking it out before its healed will result in bad infections and can damage your cartilage.
Cartilage piercings typically take 3-9+ months to fully heal (not just 12 weeks) so please make sure you don’t change the jewelry until the piercing fully heals (unless the jewelry is causing problems, than please go to your piercer immediately for proper fitting jewelry).
earring should be nickel free. earrings with nickel in them tarnish easily and can infect your ear. (example: when you wear cheap earrings, they turn your ear green. thats the nickel in it)
The jewelry should be a high-quality stainless steel, titanium, 14kt+ gold, platinum, niobium or even glass (depending on what gauge you were pierced at). The only material I’ve heard of tarnishing is silver and silver should NEVER be put into a healing piercing (i’d still be cautious about wearing it in fully healed piercings as well).
i hope this helped you a bit:Lxx!
