SOURCE: My boyfriends body.SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: So, all of my boyfriends tattoos were done in a home. With “unsanitary” equipment, by a “scratcher”.Those are in quotations because I think you guys need new things to say. I agree, most of the tattoos submitted here aren’t terrific, but there have been a few that are above par, yet their shoved in the ground because someone did them out of their home. I am a licensed body modification artist.  & let me tell you something: unless someones home is filthy, then a tattoo shop is no better. People are constantly walking in & out, touching things, leaning on counters, checking out material, going places theyre not allowed (it happens more regularly then you think) etc. I worked at a tattoo parlor for two years before I quit & began doing them out of my home. I make more money doing it this way & my name gets out more (nothing bad either). Ive never once had a complaint about my work.I also have a few licensed friends who work out of their homes as well. I see nothing wrong with home tattooing if you are working in a clean environment , because half the time when you say the place is ‘unsanitary’, the tattooer is wearing gloves/face mask, has a clean machine, new needles, & has their ink in clean caps.

MODERATOR’S COMMENT:
Wow. Erm. I didn’t even notice until just now that this wasn’t a normal bad tattoo submission. The picture really threw me off.
I’m not sure what kind of tattoo shop you worked in, but the one where I work is nothing like that. We clean the place from top to bottom every single day. We use medical disinfectant (bactericidal/fungicidal/tuberculocidal/virucidal) on all surfaces, constantly. We follow all of the laws and standards to make sure everything is clean and done with aseptic technique. And no customer EVER goes where they aren’t supposed to be or touches anything they aren’t supposed to touch. Period.
Just because the tattoo artist is using new materials doesn’t negate the fact that it’s done in an environment that isn’t clean. It also perpetuates the idea to non-professionals that getting tattooed in a house is okay. Just because you make more money tattooing out of your home (only because you don’t have to pay shop overhead, duh) doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. You’re taking away from professionals that are actually willing to pay to provide a safe, clean environment for their clients to get tattooed in, and that’s disgusting. You obviously care so much about the people you’re tattooing.
Where I live, and where many others live, it is illegal to tattoo out of any home, “licensed” or not. Just because you sat through a class to get your piece of paper doesn’t mean you evolved into a magically perfect, all-knowing, sterile-fingered being.
But yeah, you sure showed us. You’re a badass tattoo artist with your TWO YEARS of professional experience, forgoing the cost of maintaining a professional, sanitary environment (rent, electricity, insurance, health department fees, autoclave servicing, inspection fees, supplies, etc.) so you can make some extra bucks off people who don’t know any better.
- Hayley______________________________________Wow. Damn, Hayley. I’ve been leaving this sitting in our queue to deal with later and forgot about it. You left probably a more articulate response than I could ever come up with and I thank you for that.If anyone wants to check out what a joke a lot of tattoo licences are, you should go check out the artists certified by the APT. Last time I looked through there, some of the artists in my area had the shittiest portfolios and were tattooing in what looked like, at most, a poorly lit room without even anything looking vaguely clean.Frankly, what shows a good tattoo artist is someone currently licensed in at least  bloodbourne pathogens, aseptic technique, and general first aid. AT LEAST THAT. And also a shop that does everything Hayley just described. An artist who won’t cut corners health wise just to make a few extra bucks. And also has an amazing portfolio.-Kat

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: I stumbled upon this as I am following multiple piercing blogs. Forgive me If the source is incorrect, i’m still getting used to my macbook.

WHAT’S AWFUL: Everything in this image looks wrong. The hip piercings have incorrect jewelry (straight barbells) and are clearly rejecting, both navel piercings are extremely shallow, the tattoo surrounding the navel is off centered with wonky lines, and the bottom tattoo has wonky lines, is crooked, and has awful writing as well.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: HELP! There are too many thing’s wrong to accurately say how it can be fixed.

Submiters Comment: Well this is a tattoo done by a licensed tattoo artist who has the ability to tattoo in shops in 5 states. This tattoo was done at his house in a freshly cleaned kitchen on me.

What’s Awful?: The tattoo was done at home.

How it can be fixed: Help

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: Well, this is my first tattoo. I was too impatient to wait for my brother to take me to a shop and ended up going to a scratcher.

WHAT’S AWFUL: They’re just bad. They’re uneven, at different angles, and different sizes. The shading is all stripe-y, too. It used to look even worse.

I was only a few months away from being legal to get a tattoo. I don’t know why but I was stupid and decided to go with my upstairs neighbor to a “friend” of hers. She said he was a “professional.” I trusted the wrong person. When we got there I wanted to back out but didn’t feel like I could. He didn’t wear gloves. He and the two other people there were smoking pot and cigarettes the whole time. He used an ink pen and deodorant to put the “stencil” on. I laid on a Bowflex in the back room of his parents’ house.

Surprise! I got MRSA. I caught it really early so I didn’t get too sick. I had a blister right in between the two wings. It was just a little bubble, maybe half a centimeter across, but was raised up and really painful. At first I thought maybe it was an ingrown hair or something, but then it started to feel like I had a bladder infection. It hurt to pee and my stomach ached. I actually had a teacher I showed it too who used to be a nurse and she convinced me to go to a doctor. I went to the ER and they wanted to lance it but it popped on it’s own before they could get to it. I got some antibiotics and had to keep it covered for a little while. I’m allergic to bandaids too, so yay, raw skin from a tattoo, MRSA blister, and welts from bandaid adhesive, all right there. I had a scar for up until maybe a year ago that looked like a square with a little dot in the middle from it.

Then about a year later, I had it sort of covered by a guy in a shop that my friends had been tattooed by. They’re tattoos came out fine. I’m not sure if he was out of his depth or what, but the way it looks in the pic is after he “fixed” it.

HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: When I have the money, I’ll go to a reputable artist and have it covered up. Until I know what I want it covered with and I have the money, I’ll just have to settle for having a crappy tattoo for a little while.

SUBMITTER COMMENT: This is a picture from a video that came up on my Facebook news feed. Some people were having a party and someone had a piercing gun.
What’s Awful: They are using a piercing gun, which should be the worst of it but the guy is piercing his own NIPPLE with the gun. The gun was being passed around, a girl pierced her ear and another guy pierced his HAND! At least those are the 3 that I know about.Obviously it wouldn’t have been sterile, I don’t need to explain the dangers of doing this to these body parts. I can only imagine the irritation and scarification that will be caused to the hand and nipple. They could easily have spread blood borne viruses to each other.
How it can be fixed: Remove the jewelry straight away and get tested for blood borne viruses.

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT:  I’m not really very educated on alot of piercing things, but i’ve recently found this blog, and i’m trying to educate myself before I get ANY piercings or tattoo pieces done. Anyway, My friend knows this 16 yo girl that thinks she’s a professional at all body modifications, and she pierces people under the pretense that she worked as a piercer for 2 years when she actually did not. She pierced my friends septum after saying that she’s done it a million times (Yes my friend knows it was still stupid to let her do this, and highly regrets it), but after it was done the girl said she had actually never done it before. Luckily everything turned out alright. Anyway, this picture is of someone’s navel she pierced, and said person is also 16.
WHAT’S AWFUL: The blood, the area is obviously not sterile, it was obviously done at home with no care what so ever, and the jewelry is totally not the type to use on a fresh piercing.
HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: She can wait until she’s of age to do anything related to this, gain an apprenticeship at a shop, and she can certainly stop lying to people about previous experience, especially people who’re also underaged.

SUBMITTER’S COMMENT: My boyfriend’s sister-in-law and bought some tattoo equipment online like 2 years ago and was tattooing people, I guess for fun? She was doing it in their kitchen. She has an autoclave and she always uses gloves, but still… She gave my boyfriend like 3 tattoos and all of them are really wonky. He told me she’d give me one for free if I wanted, but I was just like, “no, I’m good…”
WHAT’S AWFUL: Really wonky lines, horrible shading, done in a KITCHEN, no experience or apprenticeship or anything.
HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: If those people get them touched up by professionals, and if she gets rid of her stuff and gets an apprenticeship with a professional.

Submitter’s Comment: This is a super nice girl that I know, and unfortunately it’s her first tattoo. She got it at a relatively new shop here in my town that I have heard absolutely nothing about, by a guy who she graduated high school with. As far as I know she loves it and has no intentions of getting it touched up, or covered. It breaks my heart that she put her trust in someone she knew and felt comfortable with, just to end up walking away with this… :/

What’s Awful: The lines are… awful. Not straight in the least, super wobbly. And the shading is sub-par at best. Overall it just seems like an awful tattoo, and a waste of money.

How It Can Be Fixed: a touch up will probably be able to save this one if she wants, depending on how it heals. - Kat
